Boeckman Road Corridor Improvements

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Boeckman Road provides a vital connection through Wilsonville as one of three primary east/west corridors for travel. With new Wilsonville neighborhoods in the Frog Pond area and a new primary school on the way, the road is even more essential.

The Boeckman Road Corridor Project provides upgrades on Boeckman Road between Canyon Creek Road and Wilsonville/Stafford Roads to make it safer and easier for all users—drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and riders—along the corridor.

To minimize disruptions, speed up completion, and provide cost efficiencies, the project combines four projects in one.

These include:

  • Boeckman Dip Bridge Construction
  • Boeckman Road Sewer Improvements
  • Boeckman Road Street Improvements
  • Canyon Road/Boeckman Road Intersection Improvements

  • Road Closure and Detour Information

Boeckman Road will be closed between Canyon Creek and Sherman Drive, starting the week of January 22nd to construct the new bridge and add other improvements to make the road safer and easier to use. The road closure is anticipated to be closed for about one year.

What to Expect During the Boeckman Road Closure

All east-west through traffic on Boeckman Road will be detoured via Stafford Road or Canyon Creek Road to Elligsen Road.

Closing the road is the safest, fastest, most cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way to construct the bridge and make the other improvements to modernize Boeckman Road.

  • 8 Things to Know

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link
    1. Boeckman Road Corridor Project will make the road safer to use for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
    2. The project will link schools, trails, and residential communities and build infrastructure to support the growing Frog Pond area.
    3. The project will bring the road up to urban standards, adding a new three span bridge to remove the “dip” and improve visibility. A shared use path, separated bike lane, sidewalk, and lighting are also included to make the road safer for everyone.
    4. A new roundabout will increase safety and improve traffic flow at Canyon Creek and Boeckman Road. Studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show that roundabouts
    • Reduce fatal crashes by 90 percent
    • Decrease injury crashes by 76 percent
    • Reduce pedestrian crashes by 30 to 40 percent
    • Decrease bicycle crashes by 10 percent
    1. Recreational and fitness opportunities will be increased for the community. The project includes a link to the Boeckman Creek Regional Trail between the new bridge and Frog Pond.
    2. Approximately one-half mile of new sanitary sewer trunk will be constructed on Boeckman Road to serve the Frog Pond area. The new sewer will connect existing sewer lines between the new bridge on the west and Wilsonville/Stafford Roads on the east.
    3. Native plants will be used for stormwater management and landscaping where possible. Native plants are lower maintenance, resistant to pests, and better adapted to our wet winters and dry summers. They also benefit wildlife and native pollinators, like butterflies and bees.
    4. The project is being paid for through multiple sources. This includes the Year 2000 Urban Renewal district, Frog Pond Infrastructure Funds, Road Operating and Clackamas Vehicle Registration Fee funds, and Transportation and Wastewater System Development Charges (SDC). SDC’s are one-time fees paid by developers that cover the cost of transportation and wastewater facilities needed to serve growth.

    • Improves safety for cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians
    • Enhances access and mobility
    • Increases capacity for Frog Pond development
    • Protects wildlife, fish, and streams
    • Expands recreational opportunities

    Construction

The City is using a collaborative “Progressive Design Build” delivery approach to construct the project in order to minimize traffic impacts and ensure the project is completed efficiently and cost-effectively.

In the summer 2022, crews are conducting preliminary geological assessments and defining the wetland boundary along Boeckman Creek, followed by topographic survey, and utility potholing to prepare for design and construction.

When bridge construction begins in 2023, Boeckman Road will be closed between Canyon Creek and Sherman Drive for up to 15 months. Temporary signals, detours, and other traffic controls will be used to minimize delays and to protect those working in the construction zone. Additional details will be provided as planning gets underway.

    Funding

The majority of the project funding is provided through the Year 2000 Urban Renewal district, Transportation and Wastewater System Development Charges (SDC), and Frog Pond Infrastructure Funds. SDC’s are one-time fees paid by developers at the time of development that cover the cost of transportation and wastewater facilities needed to serve growth.
